SWOT Analysis of the Appropriate Profile of the Prospective Ship Officer Cognitive Abilities in Understanding the Essence Concept of Sea Water Mechanics with the Challenges of the Industrial Era 4.0

Abstract

Qualitative analysis is used to determine the profile of prospective officers' cognitive abilities in understanding the concepts of seawater mechanics (motion mechanics, wave mechanics, and liquid mechanics) as well as difficulties that hinder their learning motivation. The final part is a SWOT analysis to find the right strategy to improve the cognitive abilities of prospective officers. The study was conducted on 45 prospective state shipping polytechnic officers in Central Java who had met the qualifications to sail. The results showed that the cognitive abilities of prospective officers in linking the concept of the essence of seawater mechanics to an event included in the category need to be improved by prospective officers personally in order to add skills that support the mastery of today's technology as a challenge to the industrial era 4.0. In addition there are still misconceptions about the flow of water flowing through different barriers or media, errors in finding the cause and effect of the specific gravity of a substance, and errors in writing symbols on a physical quantity. Prospective officers have not been able to relate the concept of surface tension and continuity equations to an event. Difficulties in mastering physics material begin with difficulty finding learning time because of the many activities outside teaching and learning hours. The SWOT strategy is to improve the profile of cognitive abilities by optimizing the strength of ship officers and shipping polytechnics to reduce weakness and be stable to threats.
